Traditional Millwrights Limited is run by Steve Boulton, who has more than 30 years experience repairing, restoring and maintaining historic wind and water mills.
Steve served his apprenticeship with the millwrights 'R Thompson & Sons of Alford, Lincolnshire', which was established in 1877. The apprenticeship provided considerable first-hand experience of the traditional methods used to repair and maintain wind and water mills. The skills required to build sails, dress stones and cog wheels were attained from years of extensive training, practical execution and vast trade knowledge, all of which have been conveyed through multiple generations of millwrights to Steve. He continued to work for R. Thompson & Sons for 25 years.
Prior to starting his own business, Steve worked for Neil Medcalf (Traditional Millwrights Ltd.) for 8 years. Neil has now retired, so Steve continues on the legacy of 'Traditional Millwrights Ltd.'
The company undertakes a variety of work, from complete restoration of wind and water mills through to periodic maintenance and inspections. Previous clients include local authorities, English Heritage, Historic Scotland, The National Trust, heritage organisations and private individuals.
